night john, mascot, and the great debaters

"Night John" is a story of a slave and her experiences. A girl named Sarny lived on a plantation in the south. she was a young slave. the plantation owner was called old waller and all the salves hated him. one day he bought a new slave. the slave was named night john. he had wipe marks on his back and had very dark colored skin. he then traded Sarny letters for some tobacco. Sarny was interested and she wanted to learn how to read. she found out that night john had escaped from being a slave. Sarny had only known of two people who had tried to escape. Jim was one of them. he did whatever he could think of to get away but old waller got the dogs after him. Jim climbed into a tree but he didn't go high enough. the dogs ripped all the meat off his legs and he stayed holding on the tree while he was dead. the other person that tried to run away was Alice. Alice wasn't a very good worker so she was forced to become a breeder. she didn't want to but she was raped. she then tried to run away but she didn't go far and she wanted to die. she was wiped and dogs attacked her but she survived and didn't do much since then. Sarny then found out that night john was caught and he came back because he needed to teach people to read and write. he felt that this was needed so people would know what the slave owners where doing to the slaves. Sarny did let the world know of her pain.
"Mascot" is part of Malcolm X's life that changed his way of thinking. As a child he was tall and not very athletic. his brother was a great boxer and he wanted to be one to. his first fight was against a white kid. he lost and he could not show his face in town. he trained hard and tried another fight with the same person. he was knocked out right in the beginning. that ended his boxing career. Malcolm then went to class, wearing a hat. the teacher made him walk around the classroom so everyone could see. Malcolm put a thumb tack on the teachers seat and and the teacher sat down. Malcolm was then sent to a detention home. the family there loved him for who he was. they didn't treat the same though. he heard the n word wherever he went. he went to school and got the best grades. when his teacher asked him what he wanted to when he grew up. he said he wanted to be a lawyer. the teacher told him that he couldn't be a lawyer because he was black and that he should be a carpenter. this frustrated him. he was one of the best in his class and he was being told to do something he didn't want to, when others that didn't have good grades but were white were told to do whatever they wanted. this is when his view changed and he wanted equal rights.
there were many similarities between "The Great Debaters", and the other two stories, "NightJohn" and "Mascot". One similarity is that Malcolm wanted to be a lawyer and and Samantha Booke wanted to be a lawyer. they both had the same dream but there is some differences. Malcolm never became a lawyer. Samantha did become a lawyer and was one of the first black women lawyers in texas. she was encouraged by her family and her friends to become whatever she wanted. for Malcolm, this was not the case. he didn't have a family to tell him to try it. he was actually discouraged to become a lawyer by his teacher. Also another similarity is lynching. In the Great Debaters, they saw a man lynched, and in NightJohn, Jim who tried to escape was holding on to a tree and dogs ripped off all the meat on his body which seemed like a lynching. they both were similar because they both where being held from a tree. also, they both were being cut and had body parts taken off their bodies. some differences where that in the Great Debaters, a mob lynched a negro and in NightJohn the negro was lynched by his owner. also in NightJohn, the dogs are the ones who caused all the pain. That is how the Great Debaters is similar to NightJohn and Mascot.

this weekend was much needed. i needed to catch up on some sleep and that is exactly what happened this weekend. except for yesterday, i woke up saw the clock and it said 9 30 and i had practice at ten! my alarm clock decided not to work. sorry Mr. Potter. i am defiantly ready for the five day weekend. it will be great. thanksgiving will also be great because my mom is cooking. she cooks for thanksgiving every year and makes my food like sweet potato surprise. hahaha. i love it so much. anyways this last week of school english class was pretty fun. The Great Debaters is a really good movie. the actors are very good because when they are debating, they seem angry and upset. they people in the movie are very intellectual. they know quotes from everything. i could never remember all of that. the movie is great so far and i can't wait to see the rest. this paper we are going to write sounds like its not fun. i wonder if we have to do it over the long weekend. if we do, at least it gives us a long time to do it. alright that is it. time to go play black ops! haha

this week, the movie we watched was pretty good. i think the actors chosen in the movie were great. they helped me with remembering the characters a lot. i also loved the play to kill a mockingbird. it was great even though it was a dress rehearsal. Mark Batke did a great job as Atticus. he was kind and serious when he needed to be. Jim and Scout were Grace and Aaron. they did great acting as children. they scenery was also amazing. the houses they made looked real and it seemed like a real street. the jail looked exactly how i imagined it. the court house was also great. i give the play a ten out of ten. the people chosen for each character made sense. like Crystal was a great choice for Cal. one thing i didnt like though was that the audience was acting immature. there was a lot of talking and people would laugh when something serious happened. also people would scream when it was not necessary. when Atticus yelled after his kids were attacked, people screamed and laughed. i didnt think that it was funny or scary. i thought it was very serious. i think some of the people didnt know how to act during the play. oh well, the play was still great. that is fifteen minutes and i am done.

ok so this play we are reading, Twelve Angry Men, got me all hyped up. how could people believe that this kid is not guilty. there were two witnesses and he had no alibi and they knife was the exact same as the one the kid bought earlier that day. i feel like the eighth juror wanted to be a good lawyer for the kid because the actual lawyer wasn't very good. he would distort facts so that it seemed like the kid was innocent. after a while they gave in and more people decided to change their minds. then everyone changed their minds. if i was the last juror that didn't change his mind i would have been stubborn and made it a hung jury because any other jury would have been more reasonable and made more facts would have come out. i think this would of been better than just saying the kid was innocent. i feel like people who thought the kid was innocent just wanted a good story. it was so obvious. i shouldnt get so worked up over this because its not a real story so i guess i wont worry about it. that is fifteen minutes and now i get to finish the rest of my homework.
